Over the summer of 1976, thirty-six bombs detonate in the heart of Cleveland while a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene and the Italian mafia. Based on a true story, Kill the Irishman chronicles Greene's heroic rise from a tough Cleveland neighborhood to become an enforcer in the local mob.

Trafia do więzienia, ale wkrótce zostaje zwolniony pod warunkiem, że zostanie informatorem FBI. Po wyjściu na wolność Danny nawiązuje współpracę z gangsterami: Shondorem Birnsem i Johnem Nardim, zadzierając przy okazji z włoską mafią. Coraz lepiej radzi sobie w światku przestępczym. Konkurencja wydaje na Greene'a wyrok śmierci, wyznaczając za jego głowę 25 tysięcy dolarów nagrody.

“O Mafioso” narra a ascensão heróica de Greene, em um violento bairro de Cleveland, até se tornar um gângster da máfia local. Virando a mesa sobre o agiota Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) e aliando-se ao mafioso John Nardi (Vicente D’Onofrio), Greene deixa de receber ordens da máfia e busca seu próprio poder. Sobrevivendo a inúmeras tentativas de assassinato pela máfia e matando qualquer um que o persegue, Danny Greene, com sua fama de invencível e notória audácia, levou as organizações mafiosas de todo os Estados Unidos a entrar em colapso, o que lhe rendeu o status de “o homem que a máfia não pôde matar”.

Danny non è un eroe, e quando incontra il boss mafioso Giovanni Nardi (Vincent D'Onofrio), stringe un accordo con lui, lasciandogli rubare quello che gli serve dai magazzini portuali in cambio di una parte del ricavato. Quando la polizia mette fine al traffico di merci rubate, Danny diventa un aiutante a tempo pieno del boss, che lo coinvolge in attività sempre più violente, fino a farsi lasciare dalla moglie (Linda Cardellini).Il sogno di Green è di aprire un ristorante irlandese e per questo chiede aiuto ad un contabile della mafia, Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken), che si offre di far da tramite con la famiglia di New York per un prestito. I soldi vengono persi dai corrieri, ma la mafia vuole essere comunque ripagata da Green, il quale per orgoglio si rifiuta e ne diventa bersaglio. Inizia una guerra personale che lo porta da una parte a sabotare le attività mafiose in città e dall'altra ad essere vittima di attentati da cui esce sempre incolume.
